MIAMI TO KEY WEST ROAD ADVENTURE

Miami to Key West is a Road Adventure to add to your Must-Travel list. For some, Miami is a destination. For Road Adventurers, it is only a starting place. The 120 mile long trek will be hard to top. You will travel US 1 along island chains on an overseas highway. This requires a drive across the longest bridge in the world. How long, you ask? 7 miles of bridge, if you have the nerve, and you will because it is beautiful. The stops along the way are their own mini-adventures, and we will give you a quick preview of the trip.

 

Upper Keys Mile Markers

–At Mile Marker 103.4 is King’s Kamp RV Park. There are many waterfront places to park that Airstream!

–Then stop at Mile Marker 102.8 at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

–At 99.5 Mile Marker, you will find Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen. This stop is in Key Largo, and is known for their Key lime pie. Seems like there might be nowhere more exciting to have Key lime pie than on a Key.

–Another must-stop, is at Mile Marker 84.2. Theater of the Sea is the 2nd oldest marine mammal attraction in the world, with a start date of 1946. There are live dolphin shows. For a fee, you can swim and interact with dolphins, sea lions, and rays.

–At the 77.5 Mile Marker, comes Robbie’s. This tropical village gives you the chance to rent a boat and get out on the water. Live music abounds, which creates the perfect island vibe. The attraction to stay for is hand-feeding tarpon. It costs a few dollars, but when is the next time you get the chance to feed some huge fish that are waiting just for you? This stop is Islamorada, Florida.

Middle Keys Mile Markers

–At Mile Marker 70, you’ll find Fiesta Key RV Park, another place to park your Airstream, and go kayaking a few miles away at Long Key State Park. The park is very popular, but will be closing October 15, 2017 for around a year for beach restoration. So, if you want to stay at one of the 51 campsites right on the beach, you will need to go soon, and make sure to make reservations, as this is a popular site.

–Mile Marker 59 has the Dolphin Research Center. This is not a showy stop, it is more educational. However, there are ways to interact with the dolphins for a fee. A little farther down, at Mile Marker 53 is the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters.

–At 48.5 Mile Marker, you find the Turtle Hospital. If you are in a hurry, the visitor center will allow you to quickly look at the exhibits. They also have a 90 minute tour that shows you the active turtle rescue and rehabilitation center. They introduce you to their animals, and tell you the stories behind them. The endangered sea turtles live in the waters around Marathon, Florida.

–The famous Seven Mile Bridge appears at Mile Marker 47. This bridge is one of 42 bridges, and is the longest bridge in the United States of America. This bridge connects the Middle and Lower Keys. If you really like exercise, we suggest the 2 mile walk on the bridge from Marathon to Pigeon Key. The old bridge built for the railroad, and while walking you can see through the gorgeous turquoise waters to the wildlife below, maybe you’ll even glimpse a shark. This Mile Marker also has a huge RV Park called Knight’s Key Campground.

Lower Keys Mile Markers

–Mile Marker 38.8 has Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina. Take advantage of laundry facilities, and many other amenities.

–Mile Marker 37 brings Bahia Honda State Park. The beach here is sometimes called one of the most beautiful in Florida. While you are stopped here, you can swim, kayak, bask in the sun.

–At Mile Marker 30, the No Name Pub waits for you to sign a dollar bill and add to their wallpaper. Apparently, you should also be on the look out for miniature deer that are the size of dogs, and cannot be found anywhere else in the world.  For the sake of these little deer, the speed limit is strictly enforced.

–Mile Marker 14.5 has the Blue Water Key RV Park, another chance to park the Airstream get unhitched take the truck and go site seeing.

Key West

–At Mile Marker 4.8 is Leo’s Campground. This is a great place to park the Airstream while you explore Key West, because when you get back the WiFi is strong, and there is a bathhouse and laundry facility.

–Finally, at Mile Marker 0 is Key West! You have finally arrived, and there is tons to do! Make sure the Historic Seaport is on your list, as well as the Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park.

An interesting landmark to visit is Ernest Hemingway’s home in  Key West, since you are here. 6 toed cats are running around the property, and some sources claim forty plus of these fuzzballs, so if you have allergies, you’re now warned. Cat lovers will be in paradise though.
