BEAUFORT / HUNTING ISLAND STATE PARK
On your next vacation, head back in time in historical Beaufort and enjoy nature’s beauty in nearby Hunting Island State Park. In Beaufort, you’ll be surrounded by historic homes and plenty of tales of time gone by. At Hunting Island, you’ll be able to explore beaches, wildlife preserves, a vast salt marsh, and one amazing lighthouse. You might even spot some of the local neighbors at the beach, including dolphins, pelicans, or loggerhead turtles. You can even camp right in the state park on your Road Adventures trip. At the state park, there are over 200 campsites available and amenities include beach walkways, hot showers, and plenty of fun in the great outdoors.
HORSE AND CARRIAGE TOUR
Take it easy in Beaufort and ride in style on a horse and carriage tour of historic homes and sites. There are multiple carriage companies that operate in the town, and each of them can take you on a journey back in time. Your guide can point out homes that were made famous during the Civil War, notable architecture that’s been painstakingly preserved, and even local sites used in movies that required a historic backdrop. What’s more, when you’re done, you can often feed your trusty horse a carrot. That’s quite a nice tip!
HUNTING ISLAND
When you head to the lighthouse, know that it’s something special. As South Carolina’s only publicly accessible lighthouse, you’ll be one of the lucky visitors to the state who can gaze out on the ocean from this lighthouse’s 130-foot summit. Climb the 167 steps during the summer and be treated to an exciting view of this historically significant destination. Originally built in 1859, the lighthouse was destroyed during the Civil War, and was rebuilt in 1875. When beach erosion threatened the new structure, it was moved a little over a mile inland in 1889 to where it stands today.
PARRIS ISLAND MUSEUM
Besides being where new U.S. Marines are trained, Parris Island also hosts a museum that displays artifacts of the area’s long history. This free museum is open most of the year, and features exhibits about the Native Americans that first inhabited the area as well as the variety of European explorers that landed on the shores. The museum’s exhibits also cover the early years of the Marine Corps and the importance of Parris Island throughout U.S. history.
